THE LONGEST STRAW
directed by Samantha Bode
In the feature-length documentary film The Longest Straw, director Samantha Bode and crew spend sixty-five days backpacking the 338 mile path of the Los Angeles Aqueducts and Mono Extension. As they walk, they speak with community leaders and residents of Los Angeles, the Owens Valley and Mono Basin to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of water importation on ecology, economy, and society, as well as the future of local water sources for Los Angeles.
The Longest Straw aims to heighten Angelenos’ awareness that the water sources they draw from are shared by various communities throughout the state of California and beyond. By coming together under one water umbrella, we can stop playing the blame game and start playing the change game to ensure the future of reliable freshwater for all.
Samantha Bode lives in Los Angeles, CA as a film and television maker. Throughout the 9 years of her career, she has had the wonderful opportunity to be creative in a range of programming, from shows about Africa and it’s descendants, to short news pieces produced by at risk youth in the Los Angeles area, to documentaries about creating your own reality through open source projects and urban farming. The Longest Straw is her first film directing endeavor. When not making films, Samantha can be found exploring the vast landscapes of the American west and south west.
Experience in a wide variety of expression gave me the firm belief that through media, there is great impact and great responsibility. Through The Longest Straw, I would like to provide a more direct way for people to reconnect with water, their source of life.
