For Immediate release

Helms Bakery District to host New Urbanism Film Festival.

The New Urbanism Film Festival announces partnership with Helms Bakery District.  The film festival all about urban planning from the pedestrian perspective will host a day full of events at the Helms Design Center on Sunday October 9th 4pm-9pm at 8745 Washington Blvd Culver City, CA 90232.

The Helms Design Center will be the hub of festival activity on Sunday October 9th, with several excursions departing and returning to the location.  Two events will take participants on urbanism adventures.  One will be a group bike ride along the Ballona Creek Bike Path. Riders will experience the river’s renaissance first hand.  The ride ends with a tour of the Playa Vista neighborhood given by architect and urban designer Stefanos Polyzoides, one of the designers of the project and one of the founders of the New Urbanism.  Another excursion takes participants on a train trip from the Culver City station to Downtown Santa Monica.  The group will get an up close look at design principles of Downtown Santa Monica from the city manager himself, Rick Cole. Other events include walking tours around the immediate neighborhood of Helms, workshops inside Helms, and BUSted the storytelling show featuring true tales told by people who don’t drive in LA.

“We’re really excited to bring the festival to Helms,”  said Josh Paget founder and director of the New Urbanism Film Festival. “The Helms Bakery District is a vibrant pedestrian-oriented destination with several designer showrooms, restaurants, and a bookstore.  And it is right near the Culver City expo line station. What more could an urbanist ask for?”

The Helms Design Center will be the host venue for the Urbanism Filmmaking Challenge.  The challenge begins with top urban thinkers and civic leaders giving TED Talk-esque presentations on how LA’s urban landscape is changing today.  After the presentations, filmmakers team up with the urbanist of their choice, and then the team has a week to create, direct, and edit a 3-5 minute documentary about the planning topic. The urbanists’ presentations will be held Thursday September 29th at 7:30pm at the Helms Design Center 8745 Washington Blvd, Culver City CA 90232.  The mini-docs will be screened at the same location on Sunday October 9th at 7:00pm.

Helms Bakery District

Today a mecca of modern furniture and design, Helms Bakery District boasts a rich and flavorful past. First opening its doors in 1931, family-owned and operated Helms Bakery supplied local residents with its fresh-baked bread delivered “Daily at Your Door” for over four decades. While no longer in the business of baked goods, the Helms Bakery building remains a cherished local landmark, recognized for its architectural significance.  Since purchasing the building in 1972, Walter N. Marks, Inc. — another family venture — has lovingly restored the historic structure and its famous Helms Bakery rooftop sign. The artisans that occupy its showrooms today share the same passion for quality and craftsmanship as the original Helms bakers.
